Chiang Mai Shopping Guide
Chiang Mai is well known for silverware, antiques, handicrafts, silk and cotton, umbrellas and parasols. Lacquerware, basketry and opium pipes made by tribals are also popular among tourists.
Silverware
Thailand is famous for its exquisite silver and some families are engaged in making them for generations. Wua Lai Road is home to these highly skilled artisans and most of the shops are also located here. These silverwares have high content (92.5%) of silver in all the products.
Silk and Cotton
The silk and cotton fabrics are bought for garment making and furnishings. The largest collection is seen at San Kamphaneg.
Umbrellas and Parasols
Bo Sang village is associated with the making of umbrellas and parasols for the past two centuries. The materials used are silk, cotton, Sa paper and bamboo, which are made or found locally. Sa paper is made by the tribals from the bark of the mulberry tree.
Lacquerware
The fantastic black and gold lacquerware made from wood, bamboo, metal, clay and paper are a treat to the eyes. Ornaments, containers and other souvenirs are made using this technique.
Hill tribe Products
The tribals show their handiwork in producing beautiful silver jewelry like necklace, pendant, bracelet and hairpin. Silver pipe with exquisite patterns are another attraction. Apparels with heavy embroidery work like jackets, tunics and dress material and other items like bags, purses are also very popular.
Furniture
Ban Thawai of Hang Dong District is the major center of furniture industry. Here you will get furniture with intricate carvings or just the framework. The wood used are mostly teak, rosewood and rattan. The artisans use both traditional and latest designs.
Woodcarving
From ancient times, Thais are proficient in woodcarving. The intricate designs of many temples of Northern Thailand are proof to this. Carved elephants, statuettes, tableware and bigger items like chairs, tables, beds and screens are bought by the tourists.
Gold Plated Orchids and Butterflies
This is a unique idea for a gift. Orchids and butterflies are treated and covered with 24-carat gold to create earrings, hairpins and pendants.
Pottery
Chiang Mai is world-famous for celadon, the high-fired stoneware with a wood ash glaze. These are handmade into dinner sets, vases, antique containers, lamp base and other decorative products.
